This storytelling campaign illustrates the danger of pneumonia in the Philippines as a leading cause of deaths for children under the age of 5 in the Philippines. There is a vaccine, but it’s priced too high for all Filipino children to get vaccinated in the long term.

A Fair Shot is a joint project of Doctors Without Borders and NextDayBetter.

Pneumonia is the leading cause of childhood deaths in the Philippines and many developing nations. Unfortunately, pneumonia vaccination remains unaffordable for many Filipino families. How might the Filipino diaspora pressure pharmaceutical companies to drop the price of pneumonia vaccination — when the realities of the homeland are too distant and abstract? After a petition campaign, the need remained to continue to put pressure to make the pneumonia vaccination available to all — especially to marginalized families who need help the most.

Challenge

A storytelling series around childhood pneumonia featuring Filipinos living in marginalized communities and the healthcare professionals who are trying their best to bridge the gap. The series features a balance of parents of children who had experienced a threatening bout of pneumonia and healthcare experts who have first-hand encounters with families struggling with the cost or access to the pneumonia vaccine.
